It’s not everyday in the life of an artist that you get to work for Disney. But then to have the honor to develop the character style, layout, and paint an actual Little Golden Book – well, let’s say I was ecstatic and stressed. Such a legacy to uphold! A unique caveat for this particular book was that my boss at Disney didn’t want the standard style of the other Brother Bear books that were to be released. He encouraged me to explore the amazing artwork of Tom Oreb (and I added Mary Blair) for inspiration. To achieve the final 1950’s vintage style, I went with gouache and colored pencil on board. A cute movie, and a fun, little storybook in the end. -S.
