The Rio girl was inspired by an old 1950s (or was it 60s?) magazine ad that was so strikingly memorable to not just because the poor dear was missing feet but because of that wonderfully graphic (read flat, strong silhouette) aesthetic that so many of the illustrations had in that era. Because plenty of what we see now in the digital age is hyper realism (and dark), it is easy to be drawn to that time when amazing artists had a sense of humor and charm. So Rio, though I gave it a bit of a modern spin, pays tribute to that glorious time more than half a century ago. –S.
